WIRE
1/2008 February

The mill housing, 14 metres in length, is made ready for transport

You wouldn’t really think that it weighed 365 tons

On seeing it in assembled condition, it becomes obvious at the hot rolling mill (right) that the relocation and transport really will require a supreme effort

22 axles, and eight tyres per axle. If something like that needed winter tyres it would cost a fair bit of money

An essential condition for the transport was that the semi-trailer should have driven axles

While one of the mill housings is already setting out on its journey, the finishing touches are still being carried out on the second housing

The crane would give up the ghost above 250 tons

A wedding with a difference: An inseparable couple for three days.

Housing No. 2 leaves the works in Hilchenbach

Bridges had to be reinforced for the transport operation

Road-blocks were erected so as to make room for the convoy

Travel was not allowed during the daytime

The journey took place on water as well as on land

The housings were transported across the Rhine to Kärlich by using a pontoon system

A rolling mill with rolling forces up to 60MN and a driving power of 2 x 7000kW is something one does not come across every day. So, when a giant like this takes to the road, transportation becomes quite a feat. Draht was on location when a rolling stand weighing in at 365t was loaded onto a 55-metre, 22-axle flat-bed trailer.
Aleris Aluminium Koblenz is one of the world’s leading producers of high-quality aluminium rolled products. With its existing 148“ hot rolling frame Aleris was limited in its ability to expand its product range. This prompted the company to replace the old system with a new 160“ frame with the new drive from SMS Demag AG. The ball finally got rolling in August 2007. One of the two rolling stands was pre-assembled and loaded onto the flat-bed trailer which set off for Neuwied. The plan was then to transport the stands over the Rhine to Kärlich via a pontoon. In doing so, SMS Demag carried out the heaviest road transport in its company history from Hilchenbach to Koblenz. The heavy goods vehicle had a total length of 55m and a total weight of 510 tonnes.
Interesting to note
Had the rolling stands been delivered in single parts, it would not have been necessary to stage just a difficult journey. However, on-site assembly would have taken another five to six weeks. Unthinkable if production is to remain up and running.
