Düsseldorf/Germany (ThyssenKrupp/SMS Demag) – ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, LLC today announced that SMS Demag AG was awarded a contract to construct two critical elements of its $ 3.7 billion steel and stainless steel processing facility planned for Calvert, AL/USA. SMS Demag will build both the facility’s hot strip mill and cold rolling complex. Installation is expected to begin in early 2009.
The hot strip mill, which will serve the carbon steel and stainless steel operations, will have an annual maximal capacity of 5.4 million metric tons of end product It will be the world’s highestcapacity line of its kind for the production of high-grade, high-strength steel. The hot strip mill will process slabs from ThyssenKrupp’s new steel plant in Brazil and stainless slabs from ThyssenKrupp Stainless USA.
The cold rolling complex that SMS Demag will construct will be comprised of a linked pickling line/tandem mill with a maximum capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of cold strip annually, plus a separate pickling unit and a skin pass mill.
