As one approaches the almost historic looking white stone building it reminds of the past industrial culture. But once you enter the premises of Prinz Verbindungselemente GmbH. you quickly realise that your first impression was wrong. Behind the old 19th century building there are approximately 10,000 square meters of modern production halls with highly modern manufacturing lines where this producer of screws, bolts and headed products manufactures more than 150 million parts per year – about half of them for the automotive industry.
Since March of 2008 a new E. W. Menn rolling machine for long parts Type HW 12-1500 has formed the heart of the production area for “long things” as Design and Development Manager Peter Magenheimer calls them. What he is referring to are screws and bolts and threaded rods with up to 1,500 millimetres overall length and thread diameters between M3 and M16.
The new E. W. Menn machine covers a diameter range from M3 to M12 with thread lengths of up to 100 millimetres. Eberhard Roth, Technical Director of E. W. Menn and mainly responsible for development of the machine states that “The extreme overall lengths of Prinz’s parts presented a special challenge for the design and capabilities of a thread rolling machine. The extreme length of these parts required horizontal positioning and feeding as compared to other E. W. Menn machines which utilise a vertical feeding design approach.” Accordingly, rolling slide, die carrier and feed system were all turned around. During the design process a new maintenance free slide guide system with precise and play free guides was developed and offers a high level of precision. Additionally, the strong drive system design developed for the new Model HW 12-1500 provides very high forming power when producing larger diameter parts and enables production speeds of up to 90 parts per minute – quite fast for parts having lengths of up to 1,500 millimetres!
Due to the horizontal parts handling requirement for Prinz’s extreme length parts and the “upside down” threading slide the adjustment spindles for the die carrier are not easily accessible. So the new HW-Series is equipped with E. W. Menn‘s proprietary Auto-Set III System, a CNC based motorised die adjustment system now in its third generation. Peter Magenheimer is very enthusiastic about Auto-Set III saying that “The adjustment can be made much more precisely than with a manual system. By just using the button on the touch screen I can adjust in 1/100th of a millimeter increments much faster and more precisely than any operator could by hand.” Also, the AutoSet III CNC-control allows storage in memory for the adjustment values for specific products (up to 1,000 different parts) that can be immediately recalled when the same product is run on the machine at a later date.
Peter Magenheimer is highly complimentary to E. W. Menn for developing a solid solution for feeding and production of extra long precision threaded parts. He says that “the thread rolling machine specialist has responded exactly to the requirements of Prinz and has delivered an excellent result”.
The integrated storage magazine of the Model HW 12-1500 is equipped with a separating system. Blanks can be supplied to the bunker manually or automated. From there they are taken to the feed rails of the threading machine. Magenheimer is amazed at the high precision with which this is accomplished. Absolutely straight and without tilting the parts are transferred to the rolling process which is controlled by a Brankamp process control system jointly developed by E. W. Menn and Prokos GmbH. Adjustment of the storage magazine and the feed system can be performed easily without the use of any tools. Adjustment is simply handled by spindle systems. These are equipped with digital readouts for exact positioning.
The new machine has now been in continuous use for almost a year, in part in three shifts running around the clock. According to Magenheimer this new addition to the thread rolling department has led to a true gain in productivity.
Prinz has concentrated on the production of fasteners for the automotive industry and its suppliers for many decades. Innovation has been very important since the company’s inception. Peter Magenheimer has now been with Prinz company for 34 years. Over this time the company has continuously added to its technical achievements. Especially for this reason Prinz values suppliers such as E. W. Menn who are willing to add to their commitment to continuous development. Mr. Magenheimer has already had good experiences with four machines of the GW-H Series from E. W. Menn. So it was clear to him that for the modernisation of his threading department he would contact the South Westphalian manufacturer. The result is the HW 12-1500, a machine that is perfectly matched to the requirements of Prinz and also to the requirements of other manufacturers of similar parts.
The long experience in the fastener field especially in cold forming of over sizes has made Prinz successful worldwide. In 2007 company sales reached 34 million Euros, meaning a raw material volume of approximately 10,000 tons. Besides important customers in the automotive industry Prinz supplies the construction, furniture and tooling industry and also many machine manufactures. Precision, quality and tradition are key words in the company and give an idea of the high requirements and challenges the company pursues. By combining know-how and highly effective production techniques Prinz has established a strong worldwide position.
When will Peter Magenheimer again contact E. W. Menn for something new? He does not say anything specific and leaves us to interpret his smile.
The HW Series has been developed for workpieces that have to be handled horizontally due to their geometrie.
