This system has substantial economic and ecological benefits because of its ability to account for changing wrap angles and the changing web tension caused by the torque of driven rolls. This means that additional idler rolls are not necessary to provide constant wrap angles. These results in a reduction of the equipment size with the corresponding smaller footprint of the machine and of course the space requirements on the shop floor. And, of course, the savings in material for these idler rolls and other machine components are also a substantial benefit. Therefore, it fits very well into the programs of the European Community to promote "material efficiency". The use of the Digital Controller Module reduces the number of additional peripheral components such as amplifiers, separate PID controllers, limit switches and displays. The input and output signals are easily figured much similar to a PLC with the ability to integrate additional process values is such as increasing or decreasing rolls diameters. The elimination or substantial reduction of interface problems between different peripheral units is an additional benefit. The loss of precision by multiple conversions of signals to various formats (analog/digital) is also avoided. All of these features result in a cycle time of less than 1ms for these generally time critical applications.
