Zurück
An executive of the world’s largest steel company, ArcelorMittal, has been appointed director general of the World Steel Association. Edwin Basson, 50, will succeed Ian Christmas, who is retiring, on 1 August, subject to ratification by the board. Basson is currently vice president for commercial co-ordination, marketing and trade policy at ArcelorMittal. He studied economics at Pretoria University in South Africa before entering the steel industry in 1994 as chief economist at Iscor (the forerunner of ArcelorMittal South Africa). He subsequently became general manager of the company responsible for coated products and flat products. The association’s chairman Hajime Bada said Basson has “excellent knowledge of the steel industry and of the strategic issues facing us.” He noted that Basson is a former chairman of the Brussels-based association’s economics committee.
