In October 2009 a new 50 m long coating-line has been put into operation at Fagersta Stainless AB (Sweden) after an assembling period of around three months. The new equipment replaces the over 25 years old one with which copper-coated coldheading wire has been produced until summer 2009 for customers in Europe and overseas market This old equipment is now followed by the latest technology available on the market.

The new coating line is providing a coating in several electrolytical steps which secures a very even and homogenious metal layer. Producer of the coating line is the swedish company Candor, a company with decades of experiences in this industry segment of metallic coatings.
The first part of the new equipment which has now been put into operation has three coating lines, which will be followed by the second extension part with further three lines dedicated for copper-, nickel- or other metallic coatings. Fagersta Stainless AB will be able to coat wire on this equipment between 1.50 and 13mm in all available grades, mainly typical ferritic, austenitic and Duplex grades for coldheading operations. After the coating the wire can be delivered in annealed, slightly or heavily drawn condition. Depending on customer needs and wire dimension the wire can be delivered in coilweights between 250kgs and 1000kgs.
With this investement Fagersta Stainless AB underlines their intention as a speciality producer to serve the coldheading market with products for most demanding requirements. “With the metallic-coated coldheading-wire we supply a product to demanding customers which gives them the best forming conditions possible”, says Fagersta Sales Director Per Bodén. “Our Coco-Loco-cold heading wire is more expensive than non-coated material but the improved forming possibilities aswell as cost saving potential in tool cost compensates the surcharge for the wire and the de-coppering”.
Many of our customers using copper coated coldheadingwire, are trying to produce their products without copper coating, but in many cases – and especially for new demanding products – these customers will happily and successfully use the coppercoated surface. With the brandname Coco-Loco-coldheading wire© we use a name which helps our customers to remember that this wire offers – despite its price surcharge – many possibilities to reduce costs and to develope new products.
Fagersta Stainless AB is with a total output of approx. 50.000 tons in 2008 one oft he biggest producers of stainless wire rod and drawn wire. Last year a turnover of around 250 Mio. Euro has been reached with some 310 employees. Fagersta Stainless AB is owned by the steel producers Sandvik and Outokumpu holding 50 prct of the shares each.
