Simple to use and highly efficient: The E. W. Menn „Adaptive Die Match“ (ADM) constantly monitors die match and automatically corrects if necessary as Managing Director Jens Tigges and Technical Director Michael Hunger of Tigges GmbH & Co. KG inspect closely.

ADM and centralised height adjustment for feeder rails and feeder console are standard equipment of the AF 61 by E. W. Menn. The Tigges machine additionally has the optional hydraulic die carrier clamping system.

Tigges GmbH & Co. KG relies on E. W. Menn thread rolling machines. Screws, bolts and various other fasteners cover an entire wall in the meeting room at Tigges GmbH & Co KG. No two parts are alike. Managing Director Jens Tigges advises that this flexibility of product type is the basic principle of the fastener manufacturer located in Wuppertal, Germany. In line with this concept the company has come to rely on thread rolling machines from E. W. Menn. Specific requirements from Tigges have been incorporated into the purchase of their newest E. W. Menn, the model AF-61. The first machine of this new generation of thread rollers has been running production at Tigges for quite awhile now with excellent results.
Over the past twenty years Tigges has increasingly developed into a specialist for manufacture of customer specific fasteners that are unique in their geometry and materials. “There is no special know-how required for producing standards.” says Tigges. As a German manufacturer, Tigges long ago recognised that competition in the standards market is quite crowded and opted to develop a much higher ability for producing specialty fasteners. The machine mix now on Tigges production floor reflects this. In the last two years alone 1.5 million Euros have been invested in the cutting and thread rolling departments. High tensile materials are a challenge for both cutting and rolling machinery. To produce products of this type Jens Tigges does not leave anything to chance and relies only on manufacturers who are known to be experts in their fields. Tigges has depended upon E. W. Menn for thread rolling machinery over the past three years. New modern E. W. Menn flat-die machines including the very first of the Model AF-61 in E. W. Menn’s new AF Series have now replaced three older machines from another maker.
“Tigges GmbH & Co KG’s requirements have had considerable influence on the development of the new generation of AF Series machines,” says Eberhard Roth, Technical Director for E. W. Menn. Especially in the area of easy handling and short changeover times the AF-61 has set new standards. In the basic version the machine is standard equipped with centralised height adjustment for the feed rails and feeder console, a drive system including a very powerful frequency converter and an operator friendly touch-screen control console. The Tigges machine is additionally equipped with E. W. Menn’s optional Hydraulic Die Carrier Clamping System, which enables precise and repeatable setting of the threading dies. The machine has also been equipped with the new Adaptive Die Match (ADM) System developed by E. W. Menn and Prokos/Brankamp. This system continuously monitors die match and corrects it automatically (while the machine is running!!) if required.
Michael Hunger, Technical Director at Tigges is convinced for the benefits of this new technology. “With this system we achieve consistently higher product quality and have greatly reduced manual checking. We have minimised production of defective parts and our die life has improved!” The ability to changeover without tools and the AF-61’s Push-Button Die Match feature greatly enhances daily use. Because of the special nature of most of Tigges products lot sizes are often small and require frequent changeovers. Together with its quick-change abilities the E. W. Menn AF-61 offers ability to produce products having a greater range of diameters, lengths and material types. E. W. Menn machines are designed with an extremely rigid machine frame. This is a key factor to successfully rolling high tensile materials. “Our first E. W. Menn machines, the Models AF-101 and AF-14 have greatly impressed us in this respect” says Michael Hunger.
Jens Tigges especially appreciates the openness of E. W. Menn for accepting new challenges and compliments the good after-sales service. In particular, for very special parts questions sometimes come up regarding feasibility of feeding or rolling that only E. W. Menn can answer. “In these cases E. W. Menn reacts quickly and has become an important partner in our every day business” he says. “This is very similar to our own way of thinking.” The same is true for the quality of the machines themselves. They all run trouble free. For future investments in the thread rolling area E. W. Menn will certainly be the first choice.
