According to estimates by the German Energy Agency, by 2030 the global demand for energy will have increased by 45%, with an average annual increase in demand of 1.6%. In the light of this forecast, the Power Cable Production Machinery and Lines Division at Troester GmbH & Co. KG has shown itself to be well prepared for the future of energy generation.

Troester is well prepared for this development of power generation increasingly from renewable energy. The cable line manufacturer from Hannover not only documented this with its innovative presence at wire exhibition, but primarily also by the product solutions that were presented. By way of example, Troester showcased a new AGP 300/35 S Belt-type Caterpillar which has been designed specifically for the manufacture of large submarine cables with diameters of up to 300  mm.
The AGP 300/35 S is maintenance free, compact in design and can be used both as a traction and braking unit. This makes it an economical solution where weights of up to 100kg per cable metre need to be transported and held securely at the end of the submarine cable manufacturing process, which passes through several stages. The high effectiveness of individual drives and its wide control range underscore the efficiency of the Troester Belt-type Caterpillar.
Cables destined to be laid along the ocean bed are produced in single segments of up 36km in length. After the cable has been produced, Belt-type Caterpillars also have the task of transporting the cable to coiling stations or directly to a nearby river or seaport onto cable-laying ships which lay the power cable onto the ocean floor directly from the sea.
The increased preparedness by customers to make investments is the result of the liberalisation of the energy market on the one hand and, on the other, the use of renewable energy – frequently also a statutory requirement. According to the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), these should constitute a 30% share of overall power generation by the year 2020. Unlike conventional power stations which are often sited near consumers in an effort to keep transmission losses low, electricity from renewable energy is generated most effectively at locations where ideal environmental conditions prevail. Consequently electricity from offshore wind parks and solar electricity from desert locations make the most sense.
“The market seems to be recovering, even though it never really suffered a collapse in Troester’s core business: CV lines for high and extra-high-voltage cables. The number and especially the quality of enquiries increased significantly and our discussion partners usually were directly at the companies decision-making level.” Says Dirk Schmidt, Sales Director of Cable Machines and Lines at Troester. “Our customers are mostly drawn from the high and ultra-high-voltage sector. It is an area which is currently experiencing a boom as investments now need to be made worldwide in the renewal and enlargement of power grids” is how Dirk Schmidt from Troester explains the positive atmosphere of the Hannover-based manufacturer of cable extrusion lines.
