Orders are flying in from the foreign markets /stationary those from the home market: During the first quarter of 2012, the machine tool index of orders, processed by the Studies Dept. of UCIMU-SISTEMI PER PRODURRE has recorded a 10.5% increase when compared with the same period of last year, with an absolute total of 124.7 (2005=100). A continuation of the positive trend, which, with the exclusion of the last assessment for 2011, shows 8 consecutive quarters of growth, confirming the good performance of the Italian enterprises of the sector. When assessing the data, it is however necessary to consider that the result was determined, once again, only by foreign demand. The index relating to foreign orders has in fact increased by 12% in comparison with the same period of last year, for a total absolute record value of 158.9.

Today, in modern wire drawing mills and cable plants, particularly those with multiline wire drawing machines, various ten of housands of costly diamond-/PCD die-tools are in permanent use. At present, the following specific die-tool data , such as property data: e.g. manufacturer, fabrication number, die-geometry, bore-size diameter, die-tool material, delivery date etc. and performance data: e.g. time and endurance of application, number of repairs, usages with new bore-sizes, amount of drawn wire materials, other information etc. are mainly to be collected and registered by means of time consuming bureaucratic procedures, considerable involvement of personnel and paperwork required only and often such important data hardly ever are within immediate reach when needed.

Running nicely – this applies even more to aqueous biopolymer solutions than to oil. These solutions are used as a cooling lubricant for machining hard metals and for tool-making machinery on which tools are manufactured. Metalworking plays a key role in industry. Drilling, milling, turning and grinding operations all use lubricants to prevent work pieces and tools from overheating and from excess wear. Standard lubricants today are based on mineral oil. This has drawbacks: fossil mineral oils come from finite resources, transport relatively little heat away from the work piece, are harmful to health and are flammable. All of this calls for extreme technical efforts, for occupational safety, fire safety and disposal, for example. So there‘s a need for alternative lubricants.
The ambitious goals set by the German government to promote energy efficiency have put pressure on companies to change their energy-use policies. But the sustainable management of energy resources and the associated energy-saving measures can only be implemented if users have a reliable means of quantifying their power consumption. A novel sensor enables them to do just that, and thereby comply with the new government regulations. The new metering device will be presented at the Sensor+Test 2012 trade fair in Nuremberg from 22 to 24 May.

At first sight it's disquieting news for established industrial nations but on closer inspection, opportunities become apparent: Emerging nations and aspiring industrial nations are increasingly investing in patents and innovations. This trend is particularly prevalent in China. Around 30 years ago, the People's Republic could not lay claim to a single patented invention. Nowadays, however, approximately 300,000 patent applications are filed in the country each year, and as such it is thought that China will become the world leader in terms of patent applications in 2011 — ahead of Japan and the USA.
