Witt has developed a new flashback arrestor that for the first time protects hydrogen systems with particularly high flow rates up to 11 bar (approx. 160psi) overpressure from fire and explosion. The specialist for gas safety equipment presents the new H-version which is an even more powerful model of its universal safety device RF85.
The stainless steel version “RF85-30N/H-ES” is suitable in particular for hydrogen users working with comparatively high flow rates of up to 900m3/h (approx. 31778SCFH). It offers protection even at 11 bar (approx 160psi) overpressure, it extinquishes dangerous flashbacks and prevents the reverse flow of gases or gas mixtures in the supply line by means of an integrated non-return valve. Until now, 4 bar (58psi) was considered the technical limit. "There is currently no comparable Flashback Arrestor with these features on the market", says Product Manager Andreas Heyer from the manufacturer in Witten. In addition to hydrogen, the new development is also suitable for natural gas (methane) and LPG (propane), with operating limits of 8 bar (approx. 116psi) and 5 bar (approx. 73psi) respectively. An integrated filter protects against dirt particles within the gas.
Thanks to its compact dimensions of only 156.5 x 84 Millimetres (6,16 x 3,31 inch), the inner thread and the advantage of installation in any orientation, this safety device by Witt is suitable for retrofitting. It is ideal for gas supply systems that had previously no or no adequate protection, chemical systems susceptible to corrosion, laboratory equipment or industrial process engineering. Safety devices have long been used at outlet points in distribution pipes with large consumers, for example when supplying flame cutting machines. Experts in general recommend that the latest technology of Flashback Arrestors is used for maximum accident prevention. This could also be an advantage when it comes to insurance issues.
This new development by Witt keeps pace with the increasing usage of hydrogen in industry. While hydrogen is still being used primarily in processes for the chemical industry, the huge potential it offers as a future energy source is making companies and research institutes work with feverish activity researching possible applications – with a corresponding demand for safety devices.
