Innovative nano functional additives from Sachtleben Chemie GmbH, Duisburg, give extra life to plastic cables and hoses and enhance their safety, with economic and ecological advantages for plastics users and manufacturers all for the consumer's benefit.

Sachtleben Chemie GmbH is to unveil innovative anti-aging additives for special polymer applications at K 2007 in October. Synthetically precipitated zinc sulfide from the tried and proven Sachtolith product family has been modified in such a way that polypropylene and polyethylene cables become brittle or break at a later – in many cases, much later – point. Hose products also benefit. This new, nanoscale product variant prolongs the life of cable insulation, pump housings, washing machine hoses and water pipes by up to 100 percent. With a simultaneous plus for safety!
The Duisburg pigment professionals have set totally new technological standards with their modern process-engineering potentials: the organic thermal stabilizers, antioxidants and metal deactivators previously used exclusively for protection of polyolefin products against material fatigue can now, for the first time ever, be partially and cost-efficiently replaced by inorganic particles to which anti-aging characteristics have been systematically added. The key to this success can be found in combination of these products, since results not even nearly as outstanding are achieved when only the metal deactivator concentration in the formulation, for example, is increased without using the new functional additives.

Cables and hoses last longer!

Even regular-scale Sachtolith, by the way, achieves around ten percent longer life for cables and hoses, but it continues to function as a white pigment. The new transparent nano functional additives, on the other hand, have no influence on polymer colour.
"Following successful laboratory testing of the thermal stability of our new generation of nano functional additives, these are now undergoing industrial-scale trials with selected customers. We then intend – by early 2008, at the latest – to offer this totally new line of products to all compounders and manufacturers", announces Stéphane David, head of Sachtleben’s Business Unit Plastics. Customer interest is great, he states, which is no surprise, when one remembers that the initial impulse for this innovation came from the innermost circle of Sachtleben customers.

Economic and ecological benefits

"Organic stabilizers are expelled from the polymer matrix by chemical and physical processes much faster than our inorganic particles", explains Dr. Petra Fritzen, the Sachtleben plastics expert responsible for new products. "The interaction of these two types, however, significantly increases the durability characteristics of polymers". With obvious economic and ecological benefits – items that last longer require repair less frequently, and have a lower environmental impact, because they also land less frequently on the scrap heap.
"We will be presenting our new functional additives to a broader specialist audience at K 2007 in October", adds David, in conclusion. "This will also give us an opportunity to discuss technical details and support with interested parties, and to work out in the context of a face-to-face talk the various individual customer benefits and the associated competitive advantages". It could, for example, prove possible to offer longer guarantee periods for a large number of diverse products.
