Posco, Korea, has awarded a contract to SMS Demag, a company of the SMS group, Germany, for the supply of the world's first continuous tandem mill with 18-high cold rolling stands for the economical production of high-quality special steel strip. With this high-performance plant, Posco intends to expand its production capacity at the Pohang location in order to be able to meet the growing demand for stainless steel strip. The plant is designed for an annual production of 500,000t of stainless steel cold strip and processes both hot strip (annealed and pickled) as well as rolled cold strip of the AISI 300 and AISI 400 grades. Here, strips with widths of up to 1,350mm and a maximum entry thickness of 5mm can be rolled down to minimum final thicknesses of 0.4mm. The centerpiece of the tandem mill comprises four 18-high cold rolling stands which thanks to the slim work rolls and the correspondingly high forming capacity are ideally suited for the rolling of stainless steel strip. All mill stands are fitted out with final control elements and measuring instruments in order to attain close strip thickness tolerances and optimum flatness with the aid of automated control systems. Automatic coil feeding with a high-performance automated laser welding machine, a large entry accumulator as well as the exit section with the flying drum shear and double coiler group guarantee smooth and continuous rolling operation of the tandem mill as well as maximum productivity. Another significant feature of the plant is the inline strip inspection, facilitating direct quality control of the finished product. For the cooling and ultra-fine filtration of the rolling oil used, provision is made for a regenerative filter system so as to ensure careful handling of the resources used and of the environment. Under the technical leadership of SMS Demag, a future-oriented plant concept is being developed for the economical production of high-quality stainless steel strip.

The purpose of the agreed cooperation is to achieve a joint market presence for suitable projects in order to implement a minimill iron and steel plant on behalf of customers. The combination of the Midrex direct reduction process and the steelworks technology of SMS Demag with downstream CSP (Compact Strip Production) facility constitutes an optimally tuned minimill concept for producing high-grade hot strip in a manner which efficiently reduces energy and costs. The alliance between the two firms is advantageous to our customers in that project realization is greatly simplified and optimum metallurgical results are achieved through close cooperation at the technical level. The Midrex process is a method for the large-scale industrial production of direct-reduced iron ore in the form of DRI (direct reduced iron) or HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). These products can be charged as Fe carriers into electric-arc or Conarc furnaces and melted down there. The Midrex process provides an alternative to the classical blastfurnace route and, by the nature of the process, produces a considerably lower degree of CO2 emissions.

SMS Demag, with some 4,500 employees one of the world’s leading metallurgical plant and rolling mill technology production companies, has acquired Hellingrath Gesellschaft für Prozessleittechnik mbH, previously a privately-owned company. Yet, even after its purchase, the company will continue to operate as a legally independent entity based in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. Right now, the transaction is still subject to examination and approval by the anti-trust authorities. Hellingrath generated sales of some EUR 16.5 million in 2006 with a workforce of 85. It has, for more than 60 years, operated in industrial automation with a focus on the European steel industry. Its range of products and services covers all aspects of planning and implementation of electrics and automation projects. Already successful long-term partners in plant construction projects, SMS Demag and Hellingrath will intensify their cooperation in the future. The acquisition is in the wake of the SMS Demag strategy of expanding its scope of electrics and automation services for both new plants and revamps.
This is where the company is positioned on the market as an integrated system supplier of holistic mechanical-electronic solutions as well as electrics and automation systems for the steel industry.

SMS Demag AG takes over Hellingrath

Metallurgical plant construction under “SMS metallurgy” brand soars – revenue doubled – focus on core business by offloading more plastics technology companies – trainee quota well above average at 8% – 150 vacancies for qualified engineers – profit sharing for employees – 2007 expected to bring even better order intake, sales and profit
The SMS group, comprising leading companies in metallurgical plant and rolling mill technology, tube, long product and forging technology as well as plastics technology, significantly increased its order intake in business year 2006 to EUR 3,235 million (previous year: EUR 2,811 million) and its sales to EUR 2,826 million (previous year: EUR 2,334 million).
There was a total of 8,999 employees (previous year: 9,223) working for the group around the world. The 2006 business year closed with a group result of EUR 85 million (previous year: EUR 42 million).
