Brussels/BE (IISI) – The 2007 edition of IISI’s World Steel in Figures is now available online. World Steel in Figures contains essential facts about the world steel industry including steel production, consumption, trade, and basic statistics on scrap, iron ore, pig iron and crude steel production. As in previous years, World Steel in Figures lists the top steel-producing countries and companies around the world. In 2006 the five major steel producing countries were:
1. China: 422.7 million metric tons (mmt)
2. Japan: 116.2mmt
3. United States: 98.6mmt
4. Russia: 70.8mmt
5. South Korea: 48.5mmt
Total world production reached 1,244.2mmt in 2006, up from 1,141.9mmt in 2005. The largest five steel-producing companies in 2006 were:
1. ArcelorMittal: 117.2 mmt
2. Nippon Steel: 32.7 mmt
3. JFE: 32.0mmt
4. POSCO: 30.1mmt
5. Baosteel: 22.5mmt
World Steel in Figures is to undergo a complete revision and will no longer be published in print form. However, given the demand for the information contained therein it will continue to be available on IISI’s website www.worldsteel.org.
World Steel in Figures has been published by the International Iron and Steel Institute every year since 1971.
