ArcelorMittal and Borusan plan new hot strip mill in Turkey
Zurück
London/UK (SBB) – ArcelorMittal and Turkish steel company Borusan have announced plans to build a new hot strip mill at Gemlik on Turkey’s Marmara Sea coast. The 50:50 joint venture will require an investment of US$500m.
The new mill is scheduled to start production in the first half of 2010 and will have a capacity of 4.8m tonnes/year. Slab will be supplied by ArcelorMittal, the company said in a statement sent to Steel Business Briefing.
The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to build the mill, but the go-ahead is subject to regulatory approval.
ArcelorMittal believes the Turkish steel market is strong and could grow at a yearly rate of 6% over the next ten years. Currently Turkey imports large tonnages of hot rolled coil.
ArcelorMittal-Borusan is the latest of several projects to install new strip mill capacity in Turkey, a local analyst tells SBB. Russia’s MMK has linked up with Turkish firm Atakas to construct a 2.3m tonnes/year capacity plant, with associated cold rolling and coil-coating operations.
Erdemir, currently Turkey’s largest flat rolled steel producer, is doubling its capacity to 7m tonnes/year with the installation of a new mill at its Isdemir subsidiary. Rebar producer Çolakoglu recently placed an order for a 3m t/y hot strip mill. Other mills are considering similar investments.
The analyst adds that, if all these projects go ahead, Turkey could become a net exporter, as hot strip capacity of 17-18m tonnes/year could exceed projected domestic demand of 15m tonnes/year by 2010.
