Ovoline was a name synonymous with the production of lubricants used in the process of manufacturing wire ropes and, following this acquisition, Fuchs has strengthened its commitment to this industry with significant investment in new, state-of-the-art production plant and equipment.

Fuchs intends to use its group infrastructure, combined with direct sales and the use of specialist distributors where appropriate, to market their range of Wire Rope Manufacturing Lubricants (WRML) worldwide.
They are proven to protect the rope strands by providing high levels of corrosion protection and are also designed to lubricate the interface, between the single wires to minimise metal to metal contact, thereby increasing the fatigue life of the rope.
Fuchs UK Company Executive, John Holdcroft explains: “The Fuchs Group has always been committed to developing its product portfolio by marketing high quality lubricants and delivering these to customers, through a customer-first service policy. Whether product development comes via our lab or acquisition, our aim is to deliver the highest quality products available, through our first class logistical infrastructure.”
For the WRML range, this meant investing in a new, technologically advanced manufacturing facility at the company’s UK site in Stoke-on-Trent. The plant has a unique capability to manufacture both existing and new, be-spoke products for stranding and closing applications for the offshore, drilling, crane, fishing, pre-stressed concrete, and elevator and mining rope sectors.
Mr. Holdcroft continues, “ Fuchs UK already had specialist experience in manufacturing products similar to wire rope lubricants before the Ovoline acquisition. We combined this knowledge with expertise, bought in from Ovoline, to design and commission a new plant capable of highly efficient, flexible manufacturing. All production at the plant is quality controlled to the highest order.”
Quality is always at the top of the agenda at Fuchs and the UK plant has an unprecedented reputation for product excellence across all of their product ranges. The UK plant meets a number of quality standards including:

- Quality Management system – ISO 9001 & TS16949
- Environmental Management system – ISO 14001
- Working towards Safety Management system – OHSAS 18001
Fuchs UK also operates a Petroleum Jelly manufacturing plant on its Stoke-on-Trent site, which is managed under the approval of the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare regulatory Authority), as the company is also a significant supplier to the pharmaceutical industry. Many of the waxes used as raw materials are the same as those used in WRML and the benefit for the wire rope manufacturer, in using Fuchs products, is that they can be confident of high product purity, presenting a low risk to the health of their workers.
”Being part of a multi-national group allows us to understand the issues that manufacturers face and we are able to address them through the resources of a global company,” Mr. Holdcroft concluded. “If a quality wire rope is what the customer wants, we would suggest that they use Fuchs Wire Rope Manufacturing Lubricants. We also offer an open invitation to wire rope company personnel who wish to come and see our modern production facilities for themselves.”
