Sikora’s X-Ray 2000: reliable and cost saving

Worldwide today, there is an increasing for measurement and control of the insulation wall thickness and eccentricity at insulating and jacketing lines. The goal to be achieved, is to reduce the material over-consumption. Further aspects and of significant importance are the reduction of start-up scrap and a reduction of rejected cabels, due to lack of quality. One action in this respect is the continuous measurement and control of the relevant product parameters directly during the extrusion process.
With the X-Ray 2000 Sikora presents a very interesting eccentricity, wall thickness, diameter and ovality measuring system, which is specifically laid-out for the use on insulating and jacketing lines, and which is in particular focused on process optimisation.
With the pressure of costs that the cable manufacturers are faced with and also due to increasing costs for raw material the X-ray technology known from the successful use at CV-lines becomes of increasing importance also at insulating and jacketing lines. For this application the X-Ray 2000 systems is available. Due to the X-ray technology the cable is transilluminated by X-rays. Measuring values are continuously available within fractions of a second, which allows a fast centering of the crosshead and a continuous measurement and control of the extrusion line in consideration of the minimum values. The measuring axes are arranged under 0, 90, 180 and 270°. The system is applicable to round cables, but permits as well the measurement of the eccentricity and wall thickness at straight and pre-spiralled sector conductors.
Interesting possibilities for the X-Ray 2000 can also be seen in the measurement of foam insulated high frequency cables, where besides the measurement of the eccentricity also the degree of foaming and the radial distribution of the foaming can be displayed.
For specific applications where it is necessary to define the true ovality of a product Sikora also offers a triple axis X-Ray 2000 T system. Thanks to the additional third measuring axis the measurement is taken in three planes at six points and thus precisely calculates the ovality.
For the analysis of the X-Ray 2000 data and the visualisation of the measuring values as well as automatic line control the processor system Ecocontrol 2000 is part of the system. The Ecocontrol 2000 displays the measuring values on a high-contrast 15“-TFT colour screen numerically and graphically. The system is operated intuitively via a touch screen. In the case of eccentricity, the wall thickness is shown as an eccentric ring. The position of the insulation that is thinnest on the wall is marked in colour. As standard, the X-Ray 2000 has a statistical function for analysing the measured results in a length or time-related trend diagram (with a zoom function) combined with a chart showing the distribution of the single values (statistical distribution curve).
In combination with the sophisticated control module Set Point 08 which is included in the Ecocontrol 2000, control of the wall thickness or diameter is available. For highest product quality and precision, and simultaneously the lowest possible compound consumption, Sikora offers the hot/cold control module HC 2000, in combination with the X-Ray 2000 and a Sikora Laser 2000 XY diameter gauge head. With the hot/cold module HC 2000, the material shrinkage is continuously calculated and taken into consideration by the control of the diameter/wall thickness.
The X-ray equipment is as simple as a diameter measuring device including the eccentricity measurement and the possibility to measure the minimum wall. The advantages of the measuring system are obvious: Once the X-Ray 2000 has been installed, the measuring device requires no further calibration as it has already been calibrated in the factory. The X-Ray 2000 provides the highest potential for savings in respect to material over consumption and start-up scrap.
A reduction of the insulation wall thickness by just 80µm, at a nominal wall of 2mm, turns into annual savings of € 100,000*. Additionally, there is a cost reduction due to the elimination of start-up scrap and the continuous on-line quality control. You can check your own specific material savings yourself and also the “Sikora return on investment” connected to the purchase of a X-Ray 2000 using our online “Return On Investment Calculator“ at www.sikora.net/products.php. The cost calculator analyses in consideration of the volume output and the material price your material savings during the production.
*Note: Extruder output: 500kg/h Operating time: 4000h/year Material costs: 1.25 €/kg 4% savings = 100,000 € (80mm/2mm)
