Wafios celebrates 125th anniversary and record figures

October 2018 — German Wafios Group – a manufacturer of wire and tube working machines with activities in the cold forming industry – has announced its figures for the past financial year. Board members Uwe-Peter Weigmann and Martin Holder are happy with the results for 2017 both for the parent company in Reutlingen and the Wafios Group as a whole.

Reutlingen/Germany (Wafios) – In 2017, the public company witnessed a 10.4% climb in sales to EUR 132.9m compared to the year before. Sales for the group improved by 9.3%, rising to EUR 184.3m, whilst after-tax profit shot up by 22% to EUR 6.1m against the year before. Record order levels in the first half of 2018 reflect the currently fair outlook for Germany’s mechanical engineering industry. As a result, sales growth is expected to continue both within the public company and the group throughout 2018.

2018 is very much under the banner of Wafios’ 125th anniversary. Founded in Pfullingen/Germany in 1893, the company was initially involved in the production of manual chain-link fencing machines. Later in 1914, Ernst Wagner, Hans Ficker and Otto Schmid established the company in Reutlingen, where it is still headquartered today. Wafios currently ranks among the world’s leading manufacturers of specialist machinery. 1,100 staff develop, design and produce wire and tube working machinery and equipment for cold forming companies.

Besides Wafios AG – the parent company with its main plant and administration – the group also comprises Wafios-Umformtechnik GmbH (Wuppertal/Germany), Witels-Albert GmbH (Berlin/Germany), Wafios Tube Automation GmbH (Simonswald/Germany), Wafios Machinery Corp. (Branford/USA), Wafios Midwest Technical Centre (Mokena/USA), Wafios de México, S.A. de C.V. (El Marqués/Mexiko), Wafios do Brasil Ltda. (São Paulo/Brasilien), Wafios (Shanghai) Machinery Co., Ltd. (Shanghai/PR China) and Wafios (Zhangjiagang/PR China) Machinery Production Co., Ltd. (Suzhou City/PR China). The company’s sales network of 70 agents covers no fewer than 100 countries.

Wafios was electrified last year by a topic that is doing the global rounds. It is conducting intensive research into the potential contribution bending machines can make in the field of e-mobility. In electric cars and hybrids, conventional electricity cables are replaced by conductor rails. And then, of course, there are the hairpins in modern electric motor stators with solid copper windings from square wire instead of many individual round wires. The company has developed their own, partially patented tools and bending technologies specifically for these hairpins, allowing complex geometries to be created. Wafios is currently producing prototypes and samples. The first machines are scheduled for delivery in the near future.
